I felt this course was much easier and helpful overall from the "open art room". I felt like I could be more creative and express my ideas more freely while doing my art projects. It can be very difficult to pick what to do in a project if there is only one option or topic to pick from, and I wouldn't have been able to show a lot of my ideas from this. By our class being able to have a range of options I feel like my artistic skills have grew because I was able to expose myself to a wide variety of different viewpoints, ideas, and materials. In my previous art classes I was always limited in what I had to do for an assignment this stump my vivid creativity and didn't allow me to show my artistic ability, but this class helped me improve to extend my work and the ideas with it. Much of the work I have done this semester was an eye opener for me because I was unaware of the depth of my artistic ability. The new materials and techniques shown to me helped me during this course and I learned how to use those different methods to make my projects, and the open art room was something new and useful to me.
In art class we have done many projects in which some were successful and some didn't turn out the way I planned it to be. During this time I learned new techniques and mediums that helped me complete my assignments, and sometimes it was challenging to find the right medium for my art work. Portraits can be very difficult especially when your trying to get the details on the face, and your medium is also very important because it gives off that effect of the portrait. If I had a choice I would want to do a do over on the portrait piece, because I feel as if I could have done a better job. The first thing I would change is the medium I used in which was colored pencils in which helped with the background and clothing. The only thing that didn't work with the colored pencils was when I started working on the face, it was hard to get the right details and color. Also the pencils weren't very good when it came to me attempting to do different shading to the face to bring out the lightness and darkness I saw in the picture. From this I wished I used regular pencils (graphite) that would be able to bring out every detail such as the eyes with the pupils, the lips, etc. When I used graphite it would have been simpler to shade in the face to make them blend easier and to show more of the light spots to the dark spots. I feel that if I used graphite my piece would have looked more realistic and my audience would have been able to see more of my details on the face such as the different crescents shown on the face.
Difficult about the class...
The ideas and how you portray them in your pieces were very important, but I was very onerous when it came to pick what to do for my project. That was one of the very difficult things in art class was picking an idea and what I should do with that idea that could make that one piece different from the rest of my projects. Most of the time when there was a new project introduced to the class, I would spend a whole day or two planning and coming up with ideas on what I should do. While I thought about what to do for my pieces I also thought about how much time is needed, how I think the outcome of the piece would turn out to be, if this is on my skill level, and what type of methods or materials I could use. Each and every time my thinking process was different, sometimes I could think of something right then while other times it took a while to find the perfect idea. I wanted each of my projects to be different and from this it made it hard to come up with ideas because most of the time my ideas would always be the same from one specific topic. A way to help me with this problem is that I could start making a list of anything that I like or what would be interesting to make as an art piece. Also instead of me being focused on finding that one good idea to come up I could explore my other options and see how those turn out in which can be easier for me to know how I can build up to finish that piece. Another difficult task that I had in art class was when we did the technique and materials with clay. Clay was a new experience for me and when I first started on it I had some complications in what to do and how to start my clay tile. Another thing that made the clay tile more hard for me was when I had to indicate a story in the tile, in which I did a scene from the movie tangled. Clay doesn't allow you to get very close details and its challenging to get details while working with clay. So when doing the tile it was very difficult especially when I had two characters on the piece, and wasn't sure how I was going to show the details on their face. After a little help though I learned to get another slab of clay and to use the tracing paper to get the character's details more clearly then to put that clay on the tile, this helped me a lot but still it wasn't easy seeing the details on the clay. I guess a solution to this is to limit my pieces as clay being the main material, and to maybe start using more of the tools such as the carving tools or the xacto to help with the clay and to get the details to show more clearer.
The Two Pieces (Compare/Contrast)...
I have done the half man and half monkey as my two in one project, in which was the first projects to do in art class. This was my first time doing something like that for a project and I think over the past few months I have improved a lot. As for example my two in one project to my portrait piece I did recently, I see a big difference. My portrait shows more details on the face and there is some shading that I did, and I have a background added to my portrait. Unlike my two in one project my portrait has no color to it in which can't grab my audiences attention and my piece looks boring. The pieces I picked to show my progress over time both show different facial expressions. One may be half a monkey face and then a man's face, while the other one is a picture of my grandmother. In my two in one project the material I used was graphite and I hardly did any shading to the faces of the money or man and they don't give off that realistic look as much as my portrait piece does. I feel like I lacked a bit on the two in one piece because I was new to the different materials and I was new on how to draw a face and I just started art class. While for my portrait I already had some practice and kept on improving on my drawing skills over the course, as well as the mini lessons we did for our warm ups that had us draw individual facial details helped me more with this project then the first one I did. My two in one project looks more dull and plain because there is no background, though I could have drawn a tree for the monkey part and some type of building for the man but yet I wasn't use to using all those different ideas and by it being my first piece in the class I had myself limited to different options. The outfit on the man isn't as detailed as the outfit on my grandmother for the portrait piece and the monkey's body isn't a creative or detailed too. I also felt as if I took more time on my portrait piece unlike my two in one and the way you work and how much time you put in it also reflects how your project turns out. It was very helpful learning all the different techniques and materials and having a closer insight about how they compare and contrast to one another and when its appropriate to use them, and from this is has improved my artistic skills.
